"This disc contains a very varied recital intended to show the range of the group's work. The opening transcription of a Bach chorale is very beautifully played and ideally suited to the gentle timbre of the Raschèr Quartet....It is in Tristan Keuris's Music for Saxophones that the quartet sounds at its most impressive, with some astonishingly virtuosic altissimo playing." BBC Music Magazine
This disc serves to illustrate the wide range of repertoire now available for the exciting medium of the saxophone quartet. The Raschèr's were founded in 1969, and have since inspired many of the 20th century's greatest composers to write for them. This disc is a shining example of their art.
The Raschèr Quartet has begun hundreds of recital evenings with Bach's Prelude and Fugue, this transcription being a fine introduction to the saxophone quartet. Elsewhere on the disc the transcription of New York Counterpoint was made at the request of Steve Reich. Written for three saxophone quartets (two taped and one live), the Raschèr's gave the first performance in November 1994. Along with Keuris's Music for Saxophones, New York Counterpoint is a world premiere recording.
