Sweelinck belonged to the family which for three generations presided over the organ of the Oude Kirk, Amsterdam. Famed as a virtuoso performer and composer, he was also a sought-after teacher, and listed among his pupils Bull, Phillips, both Scheidts, Praetorius and Scheidemann.
